Saudi Arabia looks to sports investments to score influence in Egypt

Saudi Arabia recently expanded its investment in the sports sector in Egypt. Turki al-Sheikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Sports Authority and head of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, announced March 20 a Saudi-Egyptian action plan to support Egypt’s ability to organize the World Cup in the near future.

Sheikh’s repeated attendance of Egyptian public events, in addition to his honorary presidency of Al-Ahly soccer club and the large amounts of money he spends (unlike his predecessors), has sparked criticism and raised questions about the goals behind the Saudi spending plan on the sports sector in Egypt.

Finally, a Comprehensive Sports Law in Egypt

The long anticipated law was unanimously approved by the House of Representatives. It is the first law to comprehensively regulate sports related matters in Egypt. It significantly reduces discretionary powers previously held by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (the “Ministry”) and repeals other conflicting legislation, notably certain sports specific articles of Law No. 77 for 1975 regarding Sports and Youth Institutions. Here the authors consider some key aspects of the new Sports Law.

Saudi's sport and fitness sector valued at US$ 20bn over next five years

A newly released economic report estimated that the value of Saudi sports products retail market is approaching SR30 billion ($8 billion approx.) with an annual growth of 8%. The report also estimated that investment in the Saudi sports market topped Middle East markets. The report provides investment implications that can be described as pivotal that the concerned authorities in the Kingdom support sports and health initiatives with about SR29 billion (approx. $7.7 billion) dedicated to social projects including the construction of new sports centers throughout the Kingdom.
